Life is a game of participation

When i started to write and prepare for the “is there a ted talk in you” program at slow school of business my self beliefs spoke loudly, my childhood and the lessons learned announced themselves as important. The business owner, teacher and mother had something to say.

For Kath the Pilates Method is vital for maintaining a healthy body where all joints are actively challenged through their full range of movement, with control, contributing to great strength. This is crucial for both the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries & conditions. Kath has firsthand experience of using the Pilates Method not only for body conditioning but through two pregnancies & post-natal recovery, as well as SIJ dysfunction and knee reconstruction rehabilitation.

Kath Banks (BAppSci Human Movement – Honours, Adv. Dip. Pilates, Cert IV TAE) is the owner of Aligned for Life Pilates Moonee Ponds, which has been servicing the Moonee Ponds and Essendon area for over 15 years.

Kath’s specialty areas include postural analysis, rehabilitation & pregnancy. To further enhance her understanding of the body (in particular clinical conditions and rehabilitation). For the better part of a decade Benjamin dedicated himself to his career as a fine dining chef, both here in Australia and in Europe. Accumulating years of 60-plus hour weeks being hunched over a bench, he developed chronic lower back pain and was forced to wear a brace on a daily basis just to accomplish simple daily tasks.

Wendy Turner

Wendy is the new owner of Aligned for life Pilates in Richmond. After practising Pilates for the last 14 years Wendy decided in 2009 that she wanted to have a career change and teach Pilates to others. Wendy then qualified with the Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction at National Pilates Training at the end of 2010. Wendy is full of energy which helps her as she has a full plate balancing teaching Pilates and running a studio with golf, caring for her two homes & two whippets with her husband Warwick.


Over the years Lina has had a few injuries, such as lower back pain, disc bulge and shoulder impingements. The Pilates method practiced at Aligned for Life Pilates has helped her overcome these injuries and with the guidance of the instructors is more aware of where my weaknesses lie and how to improve and strengthen them.


Chantel started Pilates while studying at The Australian Ballet School under the guidance of Andrew Baxter. With a 15 year career as a ballerina with the Hong Kong Ballet and English National Ballet, she danced the lead roles in Swan Lake, the Nutcracker and many George Balanchine works, as well as dancing for the Queen at Buckingham Palace, on the main stage at Glastonbury music festival and in the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Alex Andrews

Alex turned to Pilates due to an injury back in 2011 and was so inspired by the method that she went on to do her Diploma in professional Pilates teaching in 2014 and hasn’t looked back since!

Maggie is a dedicated Pilates teacher with 16 years of international teaching experience. She also holds a degree in research methods, Masters level certification in Pilates, is an accomplished Chi Running® teacher, and is a qualified life coach. Her clients have included sufferers of acute and chronic pain through to professional sportspeople, Paralympians and Olympic gold medalists.

Danielle has been nursing for over 10 years. Danielle first started participating in Pilates in 2003 and was so inspired by the benefits of the Pilates method she went on to train to be an instructor after returning from working in the UK.

Katy first discovered Pilates about 10 years ago when she was looking for a more stimulating fitness alternative to training at a regular gym. The mentally challenging aspect of Pilates complimented Katy’s interest in nutrition.

Lonia became a Pilates enthusiast 10 years ago after a long journey of chronic back pain and disc pathologies. An allied professional recommended Lonia take up the Pilates Method and this changed her life.

Kellie first started participating in Pilates in 2000 at Origin Pilates in Prahran. With over 10 years’ personal experience in Pilates, including training through two pregnancies, Kellie has developed a passion for Pilates and a strong appreciation for the strength and stability Pilates brings to the body and everyday life.


Lauren first found Pilates mat classes at the age of 15 in an attempt to overcome dancing injuries. She was hooked. Not only could she feel the changes in her body, she found herself more centred and ready for the challenges of dance, study and final year exams.


Lara first began mat Pilates at the age of 12 as part of the strength and conditioning program at the Australian Ballet School. She found the exercises beneficial for her dancing, and so made a habit of consistently doing them at home with her older sister Emma. After sustaining various short term injuries over 3 years and having to take lots of time off to rehabilitate, she began to enjoy the time spent doing Pilates and strength training more than dancing itself.
