The female body undergoes numerous changes during pregnancy, therefore our comprehensive understanding of these alterations have important implications for exercising safely. This specifically applies when designing our Pilates programs for the expectant mothers regularly attending our studios or under advice from their physician.

Pre natal - This workshop addresses specific contraindications, and relative contraindications associated with human gestation and when not to exercise during pregnancy. We examine exertion guidelines and measure exercise intensity so as to prevent increased foetal heart rate or elevated temperature, both of which may cause foetal distress.

Post Natal - Within the postnatal format we will discuss; post delivery complications and outline precise guidelines for the management of specific issues. Incorporating appropriate time lines for recovery, including C-section and episiotomy/forceps deliveries and postnatal depression.

This program examines the origins of menopause and societal view of the “change of Life”. With a little knowledge and clinical application women can feel empowered to facilitate a smooth transition throughout this period following the child-bearing years. Our assessment of the endocrine system and the effects of lowered levels of oestrogen are an important component of understanding the array of different bodily changes, which can impact a menopausal woman’s health and well-being. The purpose of this workshop is to contribute to the student’s understanding of the menopausal symptom timetable. We address specifically interruptions to the hypothalamic set point, resulting in hot flushes and night sweats. Leading next to the intermediate symptoms- namely urogenital aging, which describes tissue atrophy and weakened collagen fibres within the pelvic, uterine and vaginal areas. Later stage menopausal symptoms of fat distribution and the onset of osteoporosis are discussed as an essential component of preventative health strategies. Once the theory is outlined, identification of the benefits of regular exercise and specific Pilates programs will be demonstrated. The importance of addressing the special needs of peri-menopausal- menopausal and post-menopausal women cannot be underestimated in terms of both the national health debt and of course to a woman personally.

Postural dysfunction occurs in every adult human and is a focal point for application of the Pilates Method. Faulty postures occur in a combination of all planes, and in a great percentage of people the faulty postural pattern involves a primary rotational pattern. This inevitably leads to secondary dysfunctional muscle pattern responses throughout the body. This workshop will examine primary pelvic rotational posture and how to address this in the Pilates environment, including how to recognize the dysfunctional pattern/structure, how to positively affect the pattern in the Studio, exercises and positioning to address faulty patterns, and strategies to alleviate and rebalance.
